Two Simple Automated Ways To Increase Your Google Rankings For New & Important Content

If you're using a modern content management system, there are some automatic widgets you should use to improve your SEO. It will have a big impact, and after its setup, you won't have to do anything to maintain that improvement. These widgets are two dynamic content modules that should be fairly simple to set up. The only requirement for it to work is that you are creating content semi-regularly (and ideally, have a library of content as well).

Module #1: New Content Indexing

The first goal is getting your new content quickly indexed on Google. This is particularly important if you have a sitemap submitted and are still struggling to get certain content indexed. This is also important if you are a news website that needs quick indexing of content before trends shift.

The global module you want is the latest articles section, across page types. On my website, I have this module in the footer, so every page on my website links to the newest 6 content pages, which helps them get quickly indexed on the search engines. And it also helps automatically promote new articles to users on my website.

Module #2: Related Content

The second widget you want is for establishing a stable and reliable page authority for your most important articles and content. When optimizing for the search engines, an important strategy is creating topic clusters and having internal links across the content in that cluster to different parts of the cluster.

If you're not familiar with topic clusters, simply think of a topic like the content management system I use, called Joomla. All the articles I have that discuss this system make up the topic cluster.

In my case, I will tag the articles with the word Joomla, and that will create a tag page that has all the articles with that tag.

With this content strategy in place, the important module you want to create is a related content module.

You'll notice this as a section on my website under each article. I have it set to show 12 articles that share a tag, and they are ordered by the most popular articles first. I then have the 3 most popular articles that share the category next. This way, if I don't tag the article, there will at least be some categorically related content displayed. I used tags across categories and as a more specific grouping; this is why I have more tag articles. But you could go with a larger number for the category if that works better for you.

This related article module has a huge positive impact on your content getting ranked higher on Google (which will drive up traffic) because it automatically creates links from one page on your website to another page. These internal links are ingredients for telling Google the page is important. Check the page out. By having related content link to other related content, it creates topical authority. The higher the authority, the more Google traffic your website will get.

After rolling out the related articles widget, here is what happened to my Google clicks and keyword rankings.

You'll notice my trends and then in the last month, a spike upward. So, rankings and traffic jumped up dramatically after I rolled out these widgets on my site. Pretty cool.

It's important to note that Google really likes it when you update your page content, so that may be part of the explanation for the dramatic improvement. Updating the content and adding internal links at the same time is a super boost to your SEO.
