Upgrading From Joomla 4
Active support for Joomla 4 ended in October 2024.
Security support for ends October 17th, 2025
Once you get to Joomla 4, it's pretty quick and easy to keep Joomla up to date from there. There may be moderate plugin hurdles, but they are usually much less involved than a Joomla 3 upgrade. This is because improvements were made in Joomla to keep the upgrade cycle much more manageable. Templates and plugins are usually compatible, and less work is required.
If you're on Joomla 4 and want help upgrading to Joomla 5, or just don't have time to maintain it, I provide a Joomla maintenance and update service.
Upgrading From Joomla 3
Active support for Joomla 3 ended in August 2021.
Security support for ends August 2023.
Moving from Joomla 3 to 4 is a bit more involved. If the website template and plugins are not compatible with Joomla 4, the project can require a website design update on a compatible template, and then the plugins all need to be reviewed for compatibility. There are also other considerations, like URL writing, that we'll need to review as part of an audit.
The ideal situation is that the template has a Joomla 4 or 5 compatible version that can be upgraded. That will save a lot of time and provide more flexibility in the upgrade process.
My process for upgrading a Joomla website starts with a 3-5 hour audit of the website to determine the situation and what specific steps are required to make the upgrade. This will include evaluating the template and plugins.
If possible, I prefer to do the upgrade on the live site when it's a bigger site redesign project, so the benefits are gained immediately. This also allows us to make any desired changes that you've wanted to make but were roadblocked for some reason. Once we get everything ready to upgrade, we'll clone the site and run the upgrade to Joomla 4 in a sandbox environment to ensure it works without breaking the website. If all goes well, we'll run the upgrade to Joomla 4 on the live site.
Once we get to Joomla 4, moving to Joomla 5 is pretty quick. And once we get the website upgraded to Joomla 5, we can knock out other improvements, enhancements, and expansions you want to do on your business website. If you want to begin the conversation about upgrading your website, fill out the form below, and let's talk!
