How To Overcome the Difficulty of Getting Started & Sticking With It

Building a habit of creating content, whether it’s for a blog, podcast, or social media, can be difficult.

But the mental and technical issues that hold people back can be overcome with a simple tactic: a challenge.

By committing to a short-term, high-frequency challenge—like a weekday blogging challenge—you can develop the necessary skills and confidence to do what you say you want to do.

Blogging is easy for me now after having published over 600 articles and written multiple books. But it wasn't always this way.

I privately wrote in my Evernote for four years before I started publishing blog posts in 2014.

Early on, I participated in a blogging challenge spurred on by Seth Godin. After that, I participated in multiple weekday blogging challenges with friends. These helped me develop my writing muscles and finish my books.

In January 2025, I got serious about YouTube and published 77 videos. In February, I published 110 videos. This included a YouTube publishing challenge. I've now settled into doing 26 videos each month.

This challenge process helps us identify and resolve mental and technical issues, making the content creation process easier and faster over time. It builds the muscle memory for consistent content creation.

You can pick any cadence you prefer, but I would recommend making it a weekday challenge for a month (to start) as opposed to once a week or 4 times per quarter. A high-volume challenge has a way of dislodging what's holding us back while also helping us improve rapidly. A weekday challenge is also high enough volume, while also giving us breaks along the way to sustain our efforts. Most of the weekday challenges I've done have continued for multiple months.

For your challenge, pick a medium. Here are some options.

With a schedule and medium selected, go do that challenge!

And, if you don't want to do the challenge alone, check out my free Share Life academy. It's a community Discord channel, and we've got a thread for challenges, so you can do this adventure with others!
