Trump Supporter Exodus: Patterns of Doubting Republicans Leaving Their Middle School Mindset Leader

I'm a lifelong Republican who has been dismissed for failing to give Trump my absolute allegiance even when he betrays my party's values and the system we Americans all rely upon. For my principled challenges, I've been unfriended (surprisingly) and trolled mercilessly. Simply put, I'm an unwanted Republican by those in my own political party.

egypt exodus

I understand it's unlikely that I'll change the mind of those deeply loyal to Trump, even to this day, while he self-destructs, sometimes throwing them a bone. But what I can and will do is speak to the doubting members (the wavering and often silent majority) of my party that are feeling shame or a sense of despair and want a pathway out, but don't see becoming a Democrat as an option.

Many folks in this bucket are likely to leave silently and without people knowing it, often for years. I was semi-vocal in 2016 and 2020, but it was not until 2023 (7 years into the Trump era) that I got consistently active on the topic publicly.

And, for those on the left, I aim to offer hope as an exile Republican, that many of us on the right see what is going in in our party, and recognize how destructive it's become. We want it to stop, and we're playing a part in making it better.

As a principled exile, my goal is to be an example of someone stepping outside of the circle, to be the conscience of my group, and to create a tension between the contrast to the values we Republicans (including many Christians) once espoused and how much our current party leaders have betrayed our political and religious values.

Thankfully, more and more people are joining me in exile, now that they see Trump is failing to deliver on his promises, making things worse economically, and breaking the very constitutional system that allows us all to be successful in America.

Some are seeing more clearly. Others are following.

The base is no longer just complaining about prices; they are now using the very language once reserved for the Left ("Word Salad," "Gaslighting") to describe their leader (Trump).

I expect that most (if not all) Republicans will become exiles at some point in the next several years. To be an exile Republican is to invest in the long-term future. To stick with Trump is a short-term gain for a long-term loss.

When the Trump era is over, people will be ashamed of their support of him (much like the sense of shame I experienced after my extremist political season in 2007/8). It'll become an era of American history that Trump supporters will regret and not want to speak about (except as a cautionary tale).

In this blog post, I want to talk about the large number of Republicans who are entering the wilderness experience and what is finally driving them out. It's hard to know how widespread this shift we're seeing is, so I don't put stock in it to save us (and things will probably get worse as this unfolds), but it is worth emphasizing this exodus as a milestone moment. While many Republicans have gone into exile, many will need to see the toxicity for themselves in its most explicit forms without excuses before they turn away. These emerging patterns I've mapped out below are probably part of a leading indicator of what's to come more broadly later on.

This article is part of my series about groups controlled by the Middle School mindset, where we have explored toxic groups and controlling dynamics through the perspective of how people make meaning (Constructive Developmental Theory).

In a previous post, I principally explored how to reach self-authored people (Republican colluders and instrumental compromisers) who make meaning through their autonomy. In another post, I talked about how to communicate with Trump voters who derive meaning through fulfilling their needs or those who get meaning from group belonging. This post will be an extension of those posts, where I illuminate specific patterns in each of these three groups with specific complaints that those distancing themselves from Trump are making right now.

This article will get into more specifics of what's actually fragmenting MAGA, which is shifting daily. It's not to say they're going to vote for Democrats (although some will out of spite), but rather they won't vote at all in 2026 and 2028 (staying home instead), depending on how deep their sense of betrayal goes. By the end of this post, you'll learn about specific patterns regarding those who are abandoning their support of Trump — all based on their level of adult development (how they make meaning).

This departure won't go unnoticed and won't go without a response. Trump will take as many actions as he can to keep the group in line and avoid the inevitable fragmentation to come. As Trump loses his grip on power domestically, I suspect he'll look to make moves internationally.

A Note About the Following Patterns

The comments used in the sections below are selected by the Cult College YouTube Channel. On the channel, she shares her own experience escaping a cult and overlays that with the dynamics of the Trump-controlled Republican Party. In her recent videos, she's been reading disillusioned Trump voter comments (from X and Truth Social).

There has been a shift in the second half of 2025, where enthusiastic Trump supporters have not only removed their support of Trump but have become directly critical of him (in ways unseen before). I'd encourage you to subscribe to her channel for current updates and insights on the American crisis as she continues reading the new comments streaming in.

From Competence to Incompetence

Broadly speaking, why are we starting to see Trump loyalists be directly critical of Trump and regret their support? It's not just that they are saying Trump is incompetent, but that they are also debating what is driving these failures.

One reason is related to Trump's win in the presidency and his failure to deliver on his numerous promises. For example, one can't campaign on the corruption of the deep state and Democrats as it relates to the Epstein files and then, once in power, do everything in his power to stop the release of those files (which continue to reveal his involvement).

With Trump in power, his corruption and incompetence are clear for citizens to see, and now he has no excuses because Republicans have the power across all major branches of government. New presidents get a honeymoon period of grace, but that window has closed for Trump. And now, Republicans are feeling the disillusionment of their Trump vote.

Many of these comments shared below come from people who voted for Trump three times! Trump has failed to sustain the transactional contract (deliver on his promises), and this is forcing his followers into a crisis of integrity, finance, and loyalty.

Trump's success in his first term (despite its chaos, corruption, and failures) was often secured because principled, competent individuals surrounded Trump, acting as an "Instrumental Shield" to ensure policies were executed, and the system did not immediately collapse. The current chaos in Trump's second term is fueled by the purge of that shield and the subsequent reliance on incompetent loyalists. This means the leader can not deliver on promises and can no longer credibly blame others for his failures, as the system is now staffed by his direct, loyal appointments. He's been given massive amounts of power and all excuses removed.

Let's explore what this failure looks like for people at different stages of adult development (meaning making).

1. 💰How Win/Loss Mindsets Are Processing Their Disillusionment (The Transactional Mind - Level 2)

The transactional mind (level 2 in Constructive Developmental Theory) makes meaning in life through needs and desires. Those in level 2 meaning making are externally shaped, black and white in their thinking, and focus on winners and losers. Their disillusionment will form around these win-lose dynamics.

With people who see the world this way, Transactional Failure linked the leader's chaotic policies are direct personal costs and things they see as incompetence because the transactional mind only understands Gain and Loss. As they see and experience more of these losses, they'll begin to doubt.

Here are example patterns, strategic logic, and specific comments from disillusioned Trump's former loyalists who are experiencing these losses.

Pattern
Strategic Logic
Example Comments
Economic Betrayal
The Wallet Check: The transactional promise failed, resulting in measurable personal financial loss (higher costs).
"Nothing is cheaper. Everything is more expensive." / "The damn Trump tariffs are ruining this country." / "We are struggling, sir. Pay attention."
Incompetence & Waste
The Disposable Tool: The leader is unreliable, and the party's failure to execute governance makes them look weak and strategically incompetent.
"Thune and Johnson have done what? How many executive orders have been codified?" / "Electing Republicans with the majority has done zip zero zilch."
Failed Policy Delivery
Failure to Execute: Highlights the disparity between the leader's salesmanship and the lack of follow-through, proving the leader is all image and no substance.
"He lied and continues to lie, breaking nearly every promise he's made." / "The big beautiful bill wasn't nothing. It was a huge pile of [crap] nobody asked for."
Corruption of Business
Betrayal of Workers: Shows the party prioritizes corporate donor interests and oligarchy over the economic stability of the working-class base.
"My conservative dad... told me the ultra wealthy need to be taxed more..." / "GOP is going back to their 2000s brand of greed is good. F the working suckers."
Specific Policy Contradiction
Failure of Ideological Transaction: The leader chooses the interest of Tech Bros over the economic security of the working-class base (anti-America First).

"Trump's turning away from the MAGA base... 180° reversal on H1B visas."

Loss of Time/Patience
The Time Cost: The transactional mind views time as money. The failure to deliver results after a long investment is a profound transactional loss.
"I am really starting to think we got played. In hindsight, it should have been obvious that Trump was the snake all along." / "It's my kid's last year of school, and nothing has improved."
Grift Fatigue
Transactional Cynicism: Followers see even basic branding (e.g., Trump RX) as a personal cash grab.

"How much will he be paid for using his name on Trump RX? Boycott the grifters."

Announcement Rug Pull
Substance Vacuum: Buildup of "massive announcements" that end in "ridiculous graphs" and repeated slogans.
"He thinks we're dumb."
Rhetoric Fatigue
The End of the Showman: The follower is simply tired of the constant, high-volume, low-substance performance.

"Trump's 24/7 press conferences and snarky posts drive me bonkers. All yap. Minimal to no action."

Rebranding Fraud
Credit Theft: Leader takes credit for existing Congressional allocations (e.g., Veteran checks) to mask the failure of his own policies (Tariffs).
"He rebranded veteran housing subsidies as 'tariff money.' It was already a thing."
Influencer Breach
The Parallel Scam: Realizing podcasters/influencers are just salespeople using rage for clicks.
"Influencers and podcasters running a parallel scam. Outrage for clicks. Principles for profit."
90-Day Retribution Treaty
The Broken Internal Deal: Leader (Trump) promised staff (Wiles) the "revenge tour" would end early (90 days), then violated the contract.
"Remember when you told me the Retribution tour would end after 90 days?"
The Scalp Prohibition
Refusal to Fire: Leader retains massive liabilities (e.g., Hegseth) to avoid "feeding the sharks," prioritizing his ego over organizational competence.
"He’s not going to throw Hegseth over the side... that just feeds the sharks." / "Trump made a business out of firing people on TV, yet he can't fire the incompetent [pick your person] who is now ruining his credibility."
The Winner/Loser Gap
Personal Enrichment: Leader's family/kids get billions while the base gets a pittance.
"Trump made billions just this year. His kids made billions... but we have to wait for a pittance maybe next year."
The End of Excuses
Loss of Utility: Realizing the leader is knowingly refusing to act (e.g., Epstein files) despite having absolute power.
"No more excuses of I was ill-advised, or I was lied to. We did that for his entire first term. He knows exactly what he is doing this time... He is choosing his own protection over the truth." / "I’m tired of it. It is so exhausting."

The comments above demonstrate how personalized this transactional cost has become for many level 2 individuals. These young adults can expect more of these losses to mount as Trump's second term unfolds.

Let's jump to the next group.

2. 🛡️ How Those Who Find Meaning From Group Belonging are Becoming Disillusioned (The Socialized Mind - Level 3)

Now we move to the majority of the adult population, which sits in the level 3, socialized mind (Constructive Developmental Theory). People at this stage of development make meaning through the groups to which they belong. Their beliefs are shaped by the group and its leaders. They conform to fit in. They are also shaped by external forces and fear alienation (being alone).

As individuals confront the unbearable shame of their own hypocrisy and the disintegration of their social support system, we can offer them a way out. Instead of shaming them further into the group, let the group shame drive them out. An exodus of loyalty to Trump is one of the most powerful resources available for those who make meaning from belonging to a group. They fear alienation, so when they see that staying means they'll be left alone as the group falls apart, they see why they need to leave the group themselves. Once they realize their friends are leaving, and they are being left behind, they're likely to join in on the shift.

Here are specific examples of how this is unfolding for those in the socialized meaning-making mindset.

Pattern
Strategic Logic
Example Comments
Linguistic Convergence
Vocabulary Theft: The base begins using the opposition's vocabulary to describe the leader.
"Word salads. Stiff, rambling... 20 minutes of gaslighting."
Subordinated Proxy Authority
Outsourced Judgment: Cabinet members (Vance/Rubio) suppress their own judgment (Level 4) to follow a proxy (Wiles) who "manages" the leader.
"When Susie makes an order... they follow." / "She is a facilitator."
Moral Contamination
The Religious/Moral Test: The leader's actions (e.g., hatred, retribution) force the follower to betray their deepest moral anchor (Faith/Fairness), triggering intense internal guilt.
"If Kamla did what Trump has done thus far, we would be calling her out on it. So why is it wrong to hold Trump to those same standards?" / "My dad came to me crying and said he was sorry." / "The Charlie Kirk eulogy proves he does not have any faith. Erika Kirk has sincere faith; he has none." - MTG
Violated Investment Milestone
Hypocrisy Trauma: The Leader violates a standard that the base just sacrificed their reputation to uphold.
"We've lost our public legitimacy... because people can just say 'look the president said this.'"

Principled Purity vs. Personal Loyalty

The Purity Trap: The follower demands ideological purity (America First); the leader’s demand for personal allegiance ("bending the knee") is viewed as a betrayal of that mission.
"Trump flipped on everyone not willing to bend the knee or having an independent thought that isn't Trump-approved."
Shame of Immaturity
Rejection of Immaturity: The follower realizes the leader's behavior (Transactional) is embarrassing and indefensible, damaging their own self-image as a respectable citizen.
"He's a weird, petulant child with his name-calling." / "I'm ashamed of him. This entire [crap] administration is the deep state they vowed to get rid of."
The Restraint Betrayal
Evolution Sabotage: Base attempts to adopt disciplined civility, but the leader pulls them back into the mud.
"We were silent out of respect [for Reiner], and he made us look like fools."
The Humanity Threshold
Rejection of Cruelty: Violation of sacred tragedy boundaries (e.g., mocking the Reiner murders).
"Regardless of politics, no one deserves this. [Trump's comments about Rob Reiner] is a new low."
The Biden Vibe Echo
Epiphany: Realization that the current administration has the same "bad energy" as the one replaced.
"Getting the same bad vibe feelings like when Biden was in office. Lol."
Internal Civil War
Loss of Cohesion: The internal blame game shifts to attacking influencers (Podcasters) and party members, dissolving the social glue of the movement.
"Everyone knows MAGA is divided and the right-wing is in a civil war." / "I don't know, man. I don't know. Like a dumb fool. Boycott all the grifters." / "The base is divided because truly awake conservatives have realized that we have nothing in common with the political system anymore."
Conspiracy Reversal
Self-Betrayal Realization: The follower realizes the conspiracy theory they believed in (Deep State) is now being used to excuse the crimes of their own leader.
"It's almost like it's all show and they're all on the same team." / "Trump set MAGA up on J6."
Relational Betrayal
Fear of Exile: The cost of staying in the toxic group (shame, social isolation) outweighs the comfort of belonging. The family relationship becomes the safe exit ramp.
"I lost family, My MAGA friends are starting to apologize to me." / "Watching my family members looked me dead in the face with sadness in their eyes and told me I was right about Trump..."
Pathological Containment
Redefining "Strength": The follower realizes the leader's "strength" is actually an inability to perceive boundaries or reality (volatility). Managing the Patient: High-level insiders shift from "serving a leader" to "managing a pathology." They use public honesty to insulate themselves from the leader's volatility and legally sabotage his unconstitutional impulses.
"He operates with the view that there's nothing he can't do." / "He has an alcoholic's personality... personalities are exaggerated... he believes he is a king."
The Managing-the-Addict Frame
Pathological Normalization: The Chief of Staff treats the Presidency as a crisis management exercise for an "alcoholic personality."
"Knowing how to manage an alcoholic's personality... she makes herself small to try to survive."
Narcissistic Collapse (Movement)
The End of the Savior Narrative: The follower realizes the movement is no longer a force for good, but a chaotic, morally bankrupt endeavor.
"He is not who he thought he was. He is not in a bubble. He knows exactly what he is saying and doing. He has an agenda. It's the donors, not us." / "He acts as though he's witless. He's made a fool of himself with his base over Epstein, H1Bs..."
The Primal Scream of Panic
CDT Level 3 (socialized mind) Collapse: Visceral emotional reaction to the leader's instability.
"This isn't a speech. This is a primal scream of panic."
Charismatic Decay
Loss of Swagger: Base notices the leader is "stuttering," "panicked," and "rushing," shattering the strongman image.
"Swagger lost. Ego damaged. Never seen him with such little confidence."
Narcissistic Collapse (Leader)
Vulnerability as Death: The leader would rather let the institutional party sink than admit a mistake. Failure to pivot is an existential preservation of the ego.
"The leader would rather let the institutional party sink than admit a mistake."
The Strongman’s Self-Doubt
Uncertainty Unleashed: When external observers and internal followers both identify "self-doubt," absolute certainty is shattered.
"A sign of self-doubt... a crisis of confidence." — Jonathan Karl / "Swagger lost. Ego damaged." — J6er
The Eschatological Hook
Existential Trap: Many stay in the bunker because the leader is tied to a "Last Days" narrative. Admitting his failure (Epstein/Corruption) destroys their hope for an "end to all suffering."
"They ignore the most heinous things to keep the hope alive that the end is nigh." / "Heaven is here... perfect body... bliss."
The Final Break (Symbolic Action)
Public Disavowal: Followers actively remove visible symbols of loyalty (flags/hats) to signify a symbolic divorce from the movement and a reclamation of personal life/family over political idolatry.

"Turned my 'Trump Room' (full of flags and hats) back into a guest room for Thanksgiving. Choosing my family and real-world relationships over the idol."

When it comes to those at a level 3 way of making meaning, the individual is afraid of being alone. Seeing evidence that they will be alone if they stay (the herd dynamic) alleviates the shame of defecting and actually turns it into an act of important survival. If I saw a large number of people leaving the group, I’d have to question my own convictions... What do they know that I don’t?

With this dynamic, the individual creates their own dissonance internally. The external information acts as a subtle gravitational pull: "The consensus is shifting, and my continued loyalty is the abnormal, high-risk behavior."

This bypasses the typical argumentative defense mechanism entirely. For those Republicans who are having doubts about Trump and the party, as I have done, I encourage you to embrace a form of construction that makes things better. Cast a vision and make a difference locally, in your areas of influence and authority.

3. 👑 How Principles Dissidents Are Becoming Disillusioned (The Self-Authored Mind - Level 4)

People in this fourth level of meaning-making from Constructive Developmental Theory are self-authored, living out principles they've shaped and embraced. Their way of life and independence are internally driven and affect their behavior. As I shared in my previous post, Republicans in this category have become colluders, instrumental compromisers, or exiles.

People at this level are being challenged to strategic fidelity by proving that the pursuit of the current Trump ideology is structurally self-defeating and requires abandoning their core rule-of-law principles.

Here's how that is specifically and currently unraveling in the Trump movement.

Pattern
Strategic Logic
Data Points & Example Quotes
Systemic Nihilism
Demands Prudence: The individual must confront the structural reality that their principles (Rule of Law, limited government) are not being served, leading to intellectual self-betrayal.
"It's a uni party of hogs at the trough. Voting no longer makes sense." / "Trump is slowly becoming the swamp he promised to drain."
Conspiracy Collapse
Shatters the Frame: The inability to sustain the original conspiracy theory forces the mind to question the entire ideological framework built upon the lie.
"I think my conservative coworker just told me the other day she thought Trump and Israel took out CK." / "The [Epstein] files have had a strong grip on the MAGA base."
Realized Delusion
The Post-Victory Hangover: Victory removes the "campaign mask," exposing the unstable reality of governing.
"I thought I elected a Republican... now I have my doubts."
The Latent-to-Acute Break
Removal of the Shield: Once the "Instrumental Shields" (competent advisors) are gone, the base is forced to experience the leader's character directly without filters.
"He handpicked all of these losers... nothing about him makes sense anymore."
Insider Self-Preservation: Top advisors use on-the-record honesty and "leaks" to document failure and build a reputation separate from the leader's collapse.
"[Susie Wiles] knows what's in Trump's medical records... she's already giving you little excerpts ahead of time." / "She’s building her parachute early."
The Political Cost
Demand for Competence: The final calculation is that the leader has become a political liability and must be removed to save the political movement.
"The whole base is pissed at him. He's going to have to actually do something if he wants us to vote for them." / "Trump's endorsement is now a negative."
Mortal Threat Inversion
Existential Hostage Collapse: The realization that the "Other Side" is not the mortal threat promised (evidenced by Reiner's grace), while the "Protector" is the one creating actual instability.
"You don't have to stay in the bunker just because you're afraid. The monsters showed more decency than the White House."
Ideological Betrayal (Globalism)
Exposes the Fraud: Challenges the belief that the leader is principled. Shows that the ideological position was a gimmick used for personal and foreign gain, forcing a search for a more authentic principle.
"He is another puppet like you." / "He is losing his base... by attacking Massie, Rand Paul, and MTG on behalf of Miriam Eden and company."
Brand Displacement
America First vs. MAGA: The base adopts a new, more radical label ("America First") to reject the leader while keeping the grievance.
"I'm America First, not MAGA. Trump has neglected the base for corporate donors."
The PSYOP Realization
Systemic Analysis: Recognizing the entire movement as a manufactured psychological operation.
"Turns out the conservative movement was conducting its own massive PSYOP."
The Great Fragmentation
Decentralized Radicalization: As the central leader fails, the coalition shatters into competing "micro-cults" led by radical influencers. These factions spend their energy on internal purges, rendering the movement politically impotent.
"Everyone knows MAGA is divided... a civil war." / "Fuentes/Carlson/Heritage... an internecine battle."
The Retribution Confession
Legal Self-Sabotage: Insider admission that prosecutions are purely political retribution, effectively granting "Get Out of Jail Free" cards to targets.
"That one is retribution. [Wiles on Tish James]. An acknowledgement that could completely undermine the prosecution."
The New Alignment
Strategic Protest: The voter actively shifts allegiance to the opposition to punish the old group for its failure to uphold their values.
"I'm now pissed off. If we're going to get ruinous leftist policies anyway, let the leftist bear all the blame." / "I'm voting D in the midterms. And yes, spite of Trump."
The Lesser-Evil Break
Rejecting False Dichotomy: Followers reject the programmed thought-stopping sentence ("Still better than the alternative"), seeking a new moral calculus.
"It always comes down to a false dichotomy. No, Kamla isn't better. But then that really wasn't the question now, was it?" / "I'm seeing more use of, what would the Dems do that would be so much worse?"
The Internal Exile's Awakening
Fixed Force Awakening: Acceptance that the leader is a fixed pathological force that cannot be changed or "managed." The insider stops trying to fix the movement and starts documenting its inevitable failure.
"I'm not an enabler... time will tell whether I've been effective." / Comparing the President to an alcoholic father.
The Relentless Force Realization
The End of Negotiation: Acceptance that the leader is a fixed pathological force that cannot be changed, only managed, slowed, or stopped.
"I'm not an enabler... time will tell whether I've been effective." / "There is no way around him... simply slowing him down." / Acceptance that he is a fixed pathological force, not an evolving leader.
The Developmental Crucible
Trauma-Induced Growth: Recognition that the movement's failure is a mandatory catalyst for personal maturity. The follower accepts that the "Hero" was a developmental crutch that must be broken for the individual to become truly self-authored.
"I had to lose everything I believed in to finally see the truth." / "The crash was the only thing that could wake me up."
The Principled Exit
Guides the Transition: The defection is framed as a principled stand (upholding constitutional checks) rather than an emotional defeat.
"I vote for results, not to prevent impeachments." / "I'm voting with my middle finger... I'm voting for every Democrat I can find."
Strategic Accelerationism
Systemic Reset: Willingness to vote for the opposition to "burn it down" or purge the cancer.
"I'm voting D... in spite of Trump... hope they lose the midterms. Maybe it will be a wakeup call."
Terminal Fragmentation
End of the Movement: Recognizing the coalition has shattered into impotent, radical micro-factions.
"MAGA is dead. A vote for JD is assurance that Nick Fuentes gets a run at leadership."
The "Homeless" Principle
Moral Incompatibility: Refusal to unite with extremists/anti-semites as a matter of internal code.
"I'm a pro-life, military supporting Catholic patriot... I cannot unite with anti-semites and groypers."

Wrapping Up

The Trump movement's unraveling is fundamentally driven by the failure of the Level 2, Middle School Mindset leader (Trump) to sustain the transactional agreement. The antidote for Republicans who want out is the path of the exile: Principled Evolution and modeling Structural Integrity of our constitutional order (the only non-negotiable value left).

This approach of protecting and making the system better is vital because the system has revealed its vulnerability to a demagogue leader, and if we don't fix it, another more competent tyrant will finish the job Trump started (which may come from either party). We must use the chaos Trump creates to reveal exactly where the "Seawalls" (Constitutional guardrails) are thin and then rebuild them with multi-partisan buy-in. We treat Trump as a "Stress Test" for the Republic.

At the end of the day, I expect that anyone not named Trump will become an exile and face the wilderness experience. We, Republicans, can proactively embrace it, or we can go kicking and screaming. The more we embrace it, the less painful it will be for you and those on the other side of us.
