Looking for a fun family card game? Cover Your Assets is the way to go.

I first learned about and played the game during our Mexico mission trip. At the end of our long days, we'd hang out after dinner and play the game. Numerous intense brawls ensued.

After that, we bought the game, as did my mom, and now everyone in the family (including the small kids) plays.

It's a quick game to learn, with the premise being that you build "asset" collections. But, those assets can be stolen by other players, so you have to quickly cover the assets with more assets to protect the best assets. Whoever has the most assets, in dollars, at the end of the game wins.

This tension makes for a fun game because you're trying to build and protect assets. You could easily be winning by a landslide, but a series of steals, moves, and swaps, and all of a sudden, you've lost the game.

If this sounds enticing, you can grab the game on Amazon here.

Here are a few fun reviews from over there.

"I may be wrong, but I feel like my family wins for most plays ever. In the 8 months we’ve had this game we calculated that we have played it around 300 times. And that’s a conservative guess. We are addicted. Anyone else as addicted as us??" - Ravi S.

"We played Grandpa Beck’s Cover Your A$$ets on our cruise and it was a total eye-catcher — people kept stopping to ask what game we were playing! It’s fast, funny, and the perfect mix of luck and strategy. Lots of laughs and super easy to learn. A must-have for game night or travel!" - Heather G.

More Assets?

If you like cookies or fantasy, there are two other Cover Your Assets spin-offs. Cover Your Kingdom and Cover Your Cookies. They utilize the same basic dynamics, but they add some unique flair.
  • Cover Your Kingdom: This is the "Gamer’s Version" that introduces a high-fantasy pun theme, distinct "Free Creature" action cards for advanced strategy, and forces players to manage two separate stacks of clans simultaneously.
  • Cover Your Cookies: This is the "Sweet & Streamlined" version (often a collaboration with Crumbl Cookies) that maintains the classic feel but adds "Mixer" cards and "Club Collectors" to simplify the math and speed up play for a more kid-friendly experience.

You can grab both of those on Amazon as well.

More Games

And speaking of games, if you're looking for an incredible dice game, check out Space Base. It intrigued me when I heard that it was like Settlers of Katan but in space. Cover Your Assets was a bit of a gateway game for finding this incredible board game. I've probably played over one thousand games of Space Base over the past few years and could easily play another. It's got skill and luck, and every game is different. Play with two people or up to seven (with the expansion). I've bought this one for multiple friends and family, and you can grab it on Amazon here.

We also recently picked up two games, Cubitos (think Mario Kart, but a board game) and Tiny Towns (where you have to construct the best little town by being the most efficient with your resources). And another classic card game from my childhood is the French-made Mille Bornes, a racing card game. The game was created in 1954, and I have fond memories of this one as a young kiddo.

These games will keep you busy with family and community fun for a while!
