Here are several of my takeaways from this upgrade experience.

  • Correct Your Mistakes Early and Decisively. I initially chose the wrong phone. Instead of living with it, I paid a small restocking fee to exchange it for the one that was truly right for the job. If you realize you're on the wrong path in your project, don't hesitate to pivot. The small, short-term cost of correcting your course will be insignificant compared to the long-term benefit of working with the right foundation. Sticking with a mistake is more costly than correcting one.
  • Invest in the Right Tool for the Core Job. My biggest need was storage capacity for shooting video. While the first phone was an upgrade, the second phone was the right upgrade because it solved my primary problem. Before you commit, identify the single most critical requirement for your project's success and ensure your chosen tool or strategy is optimized to meet that specific need. A marginal improvement isn't enough; aim for the definitive solution.
  • Seek Out Unexpected Value. I didn't think I needed the 5x optical zoom, but it has become an invaluable feature for me. As you build your project, remain open to discovering and leveraging benefits you didn't initially plan for. These bonus capabilities can often provide surprising and significant value, turning a good outcome into a great one.
  • Protect Your Investment. I plan to use my new phone for years, so I immediately protected it with a high-quality case and screen protectors. For your project, this translates to building in safeguards. Implement backups, create clear documentation, and establish quality assurance processes. The work you put in is valuable; make sure you're taking the necessary steps to make it last.
