What is Freelancing?

In my book, Path of the Freelancer, I address the fundamental question: "What is a freelancer?" Having freelanced since 2014, after shutting down my marketing company, I embraced freelancing and eventually mastered it, leading me to write the book.

Oxford Definition of Freelancer

Before delving into the "eight achievements of every successful freelancer," it's crucial to define what a freelancer is. The Oxford Dictionary defines freelance as "working for different companies at different times rather than being permanently employed by one company."

My Definition of a Freelancer

I expand on this definition by stating that freelancers are ultimately responsible for themselves and work with multiple clients. They may operate as a 1099 contractor, a sole proprietorship, or a corporation, but their primary desire is to work as an individual rather than building a large company with a team.

Freelancers span a vast range of industries, from construction to technology and marketing. For some, freelancing is a permanent career choice, while for others, it serves as a launching pad for building a business or gaining traditional employment.

While many can benefit from freelancing, those who are committed to living the life of a freelancer will gain the most from the insights in my book.

The Opportunity of Freelancing

My perspective on freelancing is that it involves working alone with multiple clients. It's also something you can pursue on the side while working for someone else, gradually building it into your sole income source. If you achieve significant success, you can potentially earn more than a salaried employee while working fewer hours.

The true opportunity of freelancing lies in the time and financial flexibility it offers. It allows you to pursue your passions, live the life you desire, and do so on your terms.

Resources for Aspiring and Current Freelancers

If freelancing interests you, I highly recommend checking out Path of the Freelancer. You can purchase a copy on Amazon.com or explore the resources available on my website, even if you're not ready to buy the book.

Whether you're considering freelancing, are currently freelancing successfully, or are struggling, this book provides a blueprint to help you flourish. Understanding what a freelancer is and how to become one might just be the catalyst you need to take the next step on your own journey along the path of the freelancer.
